One of the goal the Ticino's Valley Conservation Area Park is to protect native habitat. In these areas biodiversity can feel safe!
Check out the project summarized in the article.
The purpose of the project is to restore the conservation status of the open habitat components of dry meadows and heathlands. Thus, eight areas have been identified to create core areas and ecological corridors within Natura 2000 network territories, three of which have been entrusted to the Ticino Valley and Lake Maggiore Protected Areas Management Authority.
Specifically, objectives include restoration of target habitat components, reduction and control of invasive species, improvement of the floristic component, creation of new habitat plots, production and export of habitat management and monitoring guidelines, and promotion and dissemination of project results. In practice, interventions carried out on the plots include mowing invasive tree species, cutting sod with removal of the surface layer, and inverting the surface soil. The project includes actions to improve the floristic composition of existing habitats; the aim is to increase biodiversity in the target habitats identified for maintaining good conservation status. The action is carried out by planting native herbaceous species in high-density groups within the areas of bare substrate created as a result of the eradication of invasive and non-invasive woody species and where biodiversity is most degraded due to the entry of allochthonous and/or not properly typical herbaceous species.
